ASnTO - 2024 Screening Signal Film
Concept
I had the pleasure of developing a sequence to introduce Spencer Moreland's Animation Show n Tell screening. This minute-long animation is inspired by old technology aesthetics, and mourning the death of a simpler, retro internet age.
Idle TV Bouncing Logo
At the beginning of the short, this retro TV is in idle mode, playing the classic bouncing logo (replaced with ASnTO's official icon). The animation was made inside After Effects, and imported onto the screen in Blender. Using shader nodes, I was able to create the RGB color splitting effect that comes from older screens.
Giant Bubble Friend
When the idle logo finally hits the corner, the audience is transported inside the TV, into a magical cube room, inspired by the original Windows XP hill screensaver. Symbolically, the box represents a funeral casket, laying our giant bubble friend to rest. He floats with his eyes closed, and arms crossed on his chest, whilst still wiggling his toes playfully. His mysterious situation is left to the interpretation of the viewer.
Windows XP Butterfly
My favourite part of the process was building the Windows XP butterflies. I imported the logo into blender, and rigged the individual planes. Then using geometry nodes, I duplicated the butterflies and had them fly in a circular motion. This small touch added great value to the scene's ambiance.
