Human Artifact Journal

Hand-stitched journal made from forgotten to-do lists, birth certificates, and diary entries created by strangers.

Concept

This journal is made from forgotten papers I’ve discovered in the wild. What started as a small hobby grew into a full-fledged project of collecting these “human artifacts” and binding them together using needle and thread.

Found Paper

These artifacts include to-do lists, birth certificates, diary entries, and funeral invites. Many were abandoned on the street, drifting in the wind, or buried in the used journal section at my local Value Village.

Closeup of journal sitting in a tree. Open at page featuring an indistinguishable handwritten note. Journal resting in the grass. Open at page featuring a pencil drawing of a man in black and blue. Journal sitting by a teal wall, with a shadow of a hand approaching. Open at page featuring an invite to a funeral. Journal sitting by a teal wall, with a shadow of a hand turning pages. Open at page featuring handwritten note: 'Hello loves. Thanks again for dearest Delilah. I've pre-batched a cocktail in the fridge fir you ('The Last Word'). Shake it up nice with ice, strain & pour! Put the coupes in the freezer for a few minutes first.'

Binding

I sew the papers together by hand. This time-consuming process encourages me to be thoughtful about each choice and patient with the creation. A single 4-page leaflet can take me several days to complete. Once finished, I bind the leaflet into the core journal and continuously add to the book over time. This project is ongoing.

Journal held up near graffiti. Open at page featuring a photograph of two women, and a handwritten note: 'Mommy, happy mothers day! I am grateful for your support. Thank you for raising me. I am the favorite child. Let's keep promises. (chinese text, sorry too lazy to figure that one out) Anyways, thank you :) - Amy Kim'

Scans

Journal scan featuring handwritten note: 'This is a private parking space. Park on the street like a normal person. I waited over an hour for you so enjoy your dose of karma, asshole.' Journal scan featuring birth certificate from Saskatchewan, with private information cut out.

Journal scan of same page, but the handwritten note is flipped over. Six hidden people are living there.

Journal scan featuring handwritten note: 'Tay, It's been one hell of a year. You might be 'new' in the grand scheme of my life, but I can't begin to describe how much you've improved it. We've gone from aquaitances (how do you even spell that?!) to wives in a short span of time, and (while its not the first time I've had a relationship move stupid fast) upi jave stuck around the longest. You've had more patience with my (and Heather's) craziness than most others could even try to muster. You're just a lovely soul who has come into my life, and I have never felt so lucky.' Journal scan featuring map of Starling Island
Journal scan featuring printed poster: 'Slow down the bustle by breathing at the speed of a gentle breeze' and a handwritten response: 'and ease you're kneese as you please'
